KONSTRUKSI MASKULINITAS DALAM FENOMENA CATCALLING DI TANJUNGPINANG

Abstract

^{Society is a social space for the construction of masculinity. One of these constructions is reflected through catcalling. The aim of this research is to understand the construction of masculinity through the phenomenon of catcalling in the people of Tanjungpinang City. This study uses social construction theory to analyze the data obtained. This research is a qualitative research using several data collection techniques, namely observation, interviews, and documentation, especially with regard to the interview technique the researcher collected 10 informants who were selected using a purposive sampling technique. The results showed that catcalling was an act that was often carried out by men against women in public spaces. Catcalling actors tend to carry out catcalling to get attention from women and as a joke, regardless of the victim's feelings and comfort. The construction of masculinity in catcalling reflects the view that men should be the rulers and women as objects. Masculinity constructs play an important role in influencing catcalling actions, aggressive and dominating masculinity constructs affect the perception and behavior of catcalling. Catcalling perpetrators consider that this action is normal, common, and becomes part of their activities. They adopt masculine values ??that value these actions as macho and normal actions for men. In this process, the social environment, such as family and peers, plays an important role in shaping individual understanding and action, unclear understanding of catcalling and weak punishment causes this phenomenon to continue.}
